UK Bed Size Guide: Which Size Is Right for You?

Choosing a bed size sounds simple until you're standing in a bedroom trying to picture how a King frame will actually fit against the wall. UK bed sizing has its own set of standard dimensions, and getting familiar with them makes the whole decision much easier.

The standard UK sizes

  • Single — 90cm x 190cm. The standard choice for a child's room, guest room, or a single sleeper who wants more length than a child's bed offers.
  • Small Double — 120cm x 190cm. A useful in-between size: noticeably wider than a Single without needing the floor space a full Double demands. Popular in smaller box rooms and studio flats.
  • Double — 135cm x 190cm. The most common size for a single sleeper who wants room to stretch out, or a couple with a smaller bedroom.
  • King — 150cm x 200cm. Longer as well as wider than a Double, King is the standard choice for couples wanting proper personal space on each side.
  • Super King — 180cm x 200cm. The most spacious standard UK size, giving each person the width of a Single bed to themselves.

How much room does a bed actually need?

Dimensions on their own don't tell the whole story — you also need clearance to walk around the bed, open wardrobe doors, and fit bedside furniture. As a rough rule of thumb, allow at least 60–70cm of clear space on each side you'll walk around regularly, and measure your doorway and staircase width if the bed frame will need to travel upstairs in one piece.

Choosing between Double, King and Super King

If two people are sharing, the jump from Double to King adds meaningful shoulder room without needing a dramatically bigger bedroom. Super King is worth considering if you're starting from a blank room, want to future-proof for a growing family sharing the bed occasionally, or simply value space over squeezing in extra floor area for furniture.

Matching your mattress to your frame

Once you've settled on a size, make sure your mattress and bed frame match exactly — UK sizing is fairly standardised, but it's always worth double-checking before you order, especially if you're combining a frame from one range with a mattress from another.
