Small Bedroom Ideas: Making the Most of a Box Room
A small bedroom doesn't have to feel cramped — it just needs a layout that's been thought through properly. Before you choose furniture, it's worth mapping out exactly how much room you actually have to work with.
Start with clearance, not just floor space
It's easy to measure a room's total floor area and assume a bed will fit — but what matters more is the clearance you'll need around it day to day: room to walk past, open a wardrobe door, or get in and out of bed comfortably.
As a rough guide, leave at least 60–70cm of walking space on any side you'll use regularly, and check your door swing doesn't collide with the bed frame or a wardrobe.
Choose your size honestly
In a genuinely small room, a Small Double (120cm x 190cm) often strikes the best balance — noticeably more sleeping space than a Single, without eating into the walking room a full Double would need. It's a size that's easy to underestimate until you see it laid out against the alternatives.
Let the bed do double duty with storage
In a box room, a separate chest of drawers or storage unit can eat up space you don't have to spare. An ottoman storage base uses the space you're already committing to the bed, turning it into somewhere to keep spare bedding, out-of-season clothes, or anything else that would otherwise need its own piece of furniture.
Keep the palette light
Lighter fabric tones — cream, ivory, soft beige — tend to make a small room feel more open than darker colours, since they reflect more of the available light rather than absorbing it. A lighter bouclé or velvet headboard can make a genuine visual difference in a room that doesn't get much natural light.
Bringing it together
A small bedroom done well usually comes down to three decisions: the right size for the room (not just the biggest one that technically fits), a base that earns its keep with storage, and a fabric tone that keeps the room feeling open rather than boxed in.
