Memory Foam vs Adaptive Comfort Material: What's the Difference?

"Memory foam" gets used as a catch-all term for pressure-relieving mattress material, but not all of it behaves the same way. Here's a straightforward look at how it works, and where adaptive comfort material fits in.

How traditional memory foam works

Standard memory foam is a viscoelastic material that softens in response to body heat and pressure, moulding to your shape and then slowly returning to its original form once the pressure is removed. That "slow return" is the defining trait — it's why memory foam has a reputation for a noticeable, sometimes sluggish, sink-and-recover feel.

Where adaptive comfort material differs

Mayfair mattresses use a more refined version of that same underlying viscoelastic principle, engineered specifically to respond more precisely to your body's weight, shape and temperature. The result is comfort that adapts more accurately to pressure points — hips, shoulders, lower back — without the exaggerated, slow-motion sink feeling associated with older, more basic memory foam.

Comfort layer and support layer

Our Mayfair mattresses are built in two parts: an adaptive comfort layer on top, and a firmer support layer beneath it. The comfort layer handles the fine-grained pressure relief; the support layer keeps your spine properly aligned underneath it. The balance between the two changes across our three depths:

Motion isolation

One practical benefit of this kind of material, shared by both traditional memory foam and adaptive comfort material, is motion isolation — movement on one side of the bed is absorbed rather than travelling across to disturb the other side. It's one of the most noticeable differences if you're switching from a spring mattress.

Which matters more: the material or the feel?

Both. The underlying material determines the general character (adaptive, motion-isolating, pressure-relieving); the feel you choose — Soft, Medium, Medium Firm or Firm — determines how much give you get before you reach the support layer beneath. Get both right and you get a mattress that suits both your body and your sleep style.
