How Long Does It Take to Adjust to a New Mattress?
It's a common experience: a new mattress doesn't feel quite right for the first few nights, even when it's genuinely the right choice. That's normal, and it's worth understanding why before assuming you've made the wrong decision.
Why a new mattress can feel unfamiliar at first
Your body gets used to the specific feel of whatever you've been sleeping on, sometimes for years. A new mattress — especially a different depth or feel to your old one — asks your body to adjust to a new set of pressure points, which can take a bit of time to settle into.
What's a reasonable adjustment window?
Most people notice a meaningful difference within the first two to three weeks of regular use. Some adjust within days; others take closer to a month, particularly if they're moving to a noticeably different feel or depth than what they're used to.
What can help during that period
- Give it consistent use. Sleeping on it every night (rather than alternating with an old mattress) helps your body adjust faster than an inconsistent transition.
- Check your pillow height. A change in mattress feel or depth can change the effective height of your head relative to your shoulders — it's worth reassessing your pillow at the same time.
- Be patient with the first week specifically. The first few nights are usually the most noticeable adjustment period; it tends to smooth out from there.
When it's more than just an adjustment
There's a difference between "unfamiliar" and "wrong for you." If you're still uncomfortable after several weeks of consistent use — genuinely struggling to fall or stay asleep, not just noticing it feels different — it may be worth reconsidering the feel you chose rather than pushing through indefinitely.
Choosing to reduce the adjustment period upfront
The best way to shorten this window is choosing well the first time. Side sleepers tend to settle faster into a Soft feel; back and front sleepers usually adjust more quickly to Medium Firm or Firm. See our full guide on choosing a mattress feel before you order.
