5 Ways to Style Your Upholstered Bed

An upholstered headboard is already a statement piece — a little styling around it is usually all it takes to finish the room properly.

1. Layer cushions by size, not just colour

A simple rule that makes a real difference: largest cushions at the back against the headboard, working down to smaller ones at the front. It creates depth even with a fairly neutral colour palette, and reads as more intentional than a single row of matching cushions.

2. Let the headboard fabric set the palette

Rather than choosing bedding first, work outward from your headboard fabric. A cream or ivory bouclé headboard pairs naturally with warm neutral bedding and a single deeper accent colour; a bolder velvet tone can carry a room on its own with simpler, plainer bedding around it.

3. Get the lighting right on either side

Symmetrical bedside lighting — matching lamps at the same height on each side — does more to make a bed feel finished than almost any other single styling choice. Warm-toned bulbs suit upholstered fabric better than cool white light, which can flatten the texture of bouclé and velvet.

4. Don't ignore the footboard end

A folded throw across the foot of the bed, or a bench at the end if your room has the depth for it, finishes the silhouette rather than leaving it looking unstyled below the headboard.

5. Keep the floor simple around the frame

A statement headboard doesn't need a busy floor to match. A simple rug — large enough to sit partly under the bed rather than floating in front of it — usually reads better than a heavily patterned one competing with the fabric above it.
